I met up with my colleagues at my previous company last night. I really miss them, we were a really tight knit group. Everyone got along really well with one another and we even made efforts to hang out outside of work.
Ever since new mgmt came in, the company vibe isn't what it used to be. I've heard rumors about tests to valuate proficiency if your field. Managing by giving threats. What has happened!!!
People are leaving or contemplating on leaving. I've been contacted by a few of them to help keep my eyes out for positions they're interested in. The morale is at an all time low.
If it's any consolation to them who are bummed out about leaving, they should know that everyone who has moved on has gone on to start at a bigger and better place.
This is my 2nd week at the new company. I love it!
Opportunities are endless here, at least in my opinion. People are great, this is one of those companies where 80% of the workplace is based on cultural fit.
I've seen 3 people on the street I categorize as celebrities... Jackie Warner (from Bravo's Work Out), Eva Longoria, Mario Lopez.
Ok, so not every place is perfect. Here are the baddies.
- The parking structure I use is about 1/4 mile away (5 minute walk). It's not bad, as long as the weather stays like this... stereotypical sunny California.
- Inexpensive food options are scarce compared to the Santa Monica office. It's back to brown bagging.
- Emails... I get over 1000+ emails in my inbox each day. It's INSANE!!! And like everyone tells me, Filters are going to be my best friend.
Yesterday I gave my official notice.
It's been an amazing run.
I started here around 2.5 years ago, back when it was just over 20 employees. Now we're over 100. Talk about crazy growth!
Turns out I have a plethora of knowledge that needs to be brain dumped to the rest of my team. I totally take that kind of stuff for granted. I've been strumming thru my head all night making sure, didn't help that I woke up at 3am with one of our dogs standing on my chest starting at me (she wanted to be let out to potty).
I'm really going to miss all the people here. I've made a lot of friends. I hope to keep in touch with at least 10% of them. Networking and staying in touch is what helped me get my future position.
I've been feeling really bad for S, my partner in crime. He used to be the only person who ran that group until I joined. I know at first he was a little defensive about sharing work, but warmed up really quickly after being able to offload all the new projects and get some long needed bed rest. He took it as well as he could, I have a feeling it was also a huge wake up call for him, to think about keeping his options open.
And lastly, the guy who made this little company's growth noticed by investors all around, D. I worked with him at a previous company and he's the person who hired me here. He left just recently to be the CTO of a former dot com, but I have no doubt that he's going to make amazingly drastic waves and revive that company from the deepest depths of darkness. He has been one of the greatest people I've ever worked with. Amazingly talented with an open mind and innovated innovations. I'm going to make an huge effort to chat/email him from time to time.
Crap, I'm rambling.
I feel like a dinosaur here, sometimes good, sometimes bad... but overall a great experience.
